Homeschooling
No, we are not the experts on homeschooling! We just do it. We do not follow a specific curriculum, but our style is probably unschooling. It is important for us to teach the kids to be self-working, be able to get information from the library and internet.
As homeschoolers ourselves, we find Linux a cornerstone in the whole education process. We do not have a computer for each kid, and they have ot share. With five kids ranging in ages between four and 16 ( in 2008), we can really do without the fights that would result when using Windows with non-priviledged home folders. Each user in our household has a totally private folder for their stuff, with group access to specific files for specific users. The folders shared by my wife and I on both her and mine computers that are connected via a network, is secure from the kids. Even if they delete everything they can lay their hands on, we will basically not know it! Linux is a secure system.
OK, so what about the little ones? Have a look at
Ubuntu's Edubuntu webpage for a description of some of the education programs available. Remember that the Debian version included in our
Linux course contains all these programs and more. You can run these education programs on any Linux distribution of your choice. It may just not be included in some Linux distributions.
